BRUCE Rioch took over the Burnden Park manager's job today with his sights firmly set on guiding the club back to the top. The man who led Middlesbrough from the Third Division to the First in successive seasons believes the good times for Bolton could be just around the corner.

ARSONISTS caused thousands of pounds worth of damage in a blaze at Westhoughton's new Methodist Church early today. Raiders broke into the Wigan Road building early this morning, and it is believed they set fire to the Sunday School Room using paint stripper.

SOCCER star Paul Mariner is playing for England today, which has caused problems for his old school. Bolton-born Paul was due to open Rivington and Blackrod High School's annual fete, but his international call up meant organisers had to find a replacement. Deputy head teacher Mrs Anne Sharples, joked: "We're rather annoyed with Don Revie, but we're obviously very pleased for Paul." The fete will be opened by Mr David Brown, chairman of the parent/teacher association. Ipswich striker Paul was a pupil at Horwich County Secondary School, which became part of the new comprehensive high school in 1973.

SIR,- While golf is a good form of relaxation for many people, those who live near golf courses are also entitled to a bit of relaxation.

The houses in Garswood-rd., which run parallel to the Great Lever golf course, have for some time now undergone a regular bombardment of golf balls, and every now and then a window is smashed.

What I am chiefly concerned about is the danger to children playing near their homes. Not long ago a baby in his pram was missed by inches. Other children have given evidence of "near misses".

In fairness to the club, it must be said that they have warned their members of the danger. The warning, though well meant, is useless because it assumes that members have full control over the ultimate destination of the ball.

Why not shorten the first drive by about 75 yards or so to such a point where the problem does not depend on the accuracy of the golfers. I think that if the members of the club realize the need for some action they will be sportsmen anough to take it. Yours, Live and Let Live.

WITHIN the next few days the Farnworth District Council regain control of the tramways in Bolton-rd. and Market-st., which 21 years ago, when horse cars superseded the old omnibuses between Farnworth and Bolton, the late Local Board leased to Messrs E. Holden and Co.

The lines have been in possession of the Bolton Corporation since January, 1900, when they took over Messrs Holden's lease, and their first electric car was run into Farnworth at the beginning of April that year.

We understand that the lease terminates on the 1st of June, so that on Monday, Farnworth cars will for the first time be seen traversing the principal thoroughfare.

When current from the Bolton electricity works is cut off at the Moses Gate boundary, there will be cables from the Farnworth works to connect with the equipment, which will be served for the present from the top of Market-st.
