COMMUTERS in Bolton are being urged to leave their cars at home and pedal to work as part of "Bike Week" from June 15 to 23.
On Bike to Work Day, on Wednesday, June 19, a trophy is up for grabs for the local firm that persuades its cycling workers to choose the healthier and greener commuter option.
And those who answer the challenge will be rewarded with a free breakfast at the Patagonia Cafe in Bradshawgate between 7.30 and 9.30am.
The Mass Bike Ride, the same day, will take place in the evening and is open for everyone. The route starts at Victoria Square at 6.30pm and then heads seven miles to the Commonwealth Games Cycling Route at Rivington.
Free refreshments for the thirsty cyclists will be available at the Rivington Tea Rooms, after which they will head back to Bolton. An adult must accompany children under the age of 14.
Cllr Anthony Connell, chairman of Bolton Cycling Forum, said: "As well as the 'Bike Week' events, we have also got the Manchester to Blackpool Charity Race, the Horwich Carnival Cycle Races, the British Cycling National Road Race Championships and Elite Mountain Bike Challenge, as well as the Commonwealth Games events."
For a free Bolton's Festival of Cycling leaflet, with further information on all of the events, phone Kathryn Boggiano on 01204 336114.
BOLTON'S Festival of Cycling will take on a global flavour this year as the town gets ready to host spectators and competitors at the Commonwealth Games.
The town has three cycling events on the moors above Rivington and the badminton competition at Bolton Arena during the Games from July 25 to August 4.However, between June 15 and 23, "Bike Week", the UK's annual nationwide celebration of cycling will also become a "curtain raiser" for the town.
