My Three Angels by Sam and Bella Spewack, St Vincent's Amateur Dramatic Society, Runs until Saturday
THE unlikely humour of life near a French penal settlement in South America, during Christmas 1910, was captured well by St Vincent's in My Three Angels.
Emile and Felix Dulay, played by Joan Rogers and Bert Haliday, run a local store in French Guiana, with alterations being made to the roof by three convicts from the prison.
Alfred, Jules and Joseph, slowly become part of the lives of the Dulay family, over the festive holiday, catching a chicken for Christmas dinner and match making for the Dulay's daughter Marie-Louise, played by Andrea Charlson.
They also try to convince Felix's cousin, Gaston Lemar, played by Stan Porter, on his visit to the shop that business is booming and that Gaston's nephew, Paul, played by Paul Cohen, should marry Marie Louise.
The audience know how the three convicts ended up in the penal colony, but it is impossible not to warm to them.
The prisoners' humour was brought to life by Patrick Maloney and Howard Clare in the parts of Alfred and Jules, and Bill Rogers - well cast as Joseph, who received the most laughs during the evening.
The set design and construction is also worth a mention as a convincing living room, complete with bamboo pillars and louvre doors.
My Three Angels was a great night out, and a welcome lift at the end of the Jubilee weekend.
