WHEN I printed pictures of Joseph Street and Barrier Street (better known as Shed Lane), Bolton, a church was mentioned in the May 4 article, although since then a couple of readers have said they could not recall such a building.
I have now had a letter from Miss C Longworth, of Windsor Court, Holmeswood Road, Bolton, who tells me that her great-grandparents, Abraham and Mary Birchall, lived at the corner of Shed Lane, 85 St Helens Road, and in their home, services (cottage meetings) were held.
"Apparently, when more space was needed, permission was granted to use John Tonge's school at the bottom of Shed Lane, and in August, 1858, the first Wesleyan Sunday School was opened.
"After various moves, Daubhill Wesleyan Chapel was opened in 1886 (sadly closed in 2001)."
