MOTORISTS in rural Bolton, covering Belmont, Edgworth, Turton and Chapeltown, are being urged to kill their speed and save lives under a new police campaign.

Officers in Lancashire will soon test new Speed Trailer devices aimed at reducing drivers' speeds on the road.

The trailers will display speeds on a large screen positioned at the side of the road and also record speeds at the same time, enabling police to collect data and making motorists more aware of their speed.

The devices -- to be used for the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety -- will go on trial in Lancashire.

But police stress they will not be used for enforcement.

They will be used at speed and casualty hot-spots to compile information.

Ch Insp Stuart Harmen said: "We are encouraging motorists to be aware of their speed at all times. They will be highly visible and will clearly display what speed motorists are travelling at." The device is American made.

Ch Insp Harmen added: "We hope this new equipment, which if successful could be rolled out across the country, will demonstrate that we are constantly looking at ways in which we can impact on driver behaviour by slowing down motorists without necessarily prosecuting them."
