BOLTON Wanderers star Stig Tofting will face trial in Denmark on assault charges during the new football season.
The midfielder had hoped to avoid court action following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted two restaurant workers. Immediately after his arrest Tofting's agent suggested the situation could be resolved amicably when the player apologised to restaurant staff. But Danish police have now confirmed that he has been referred to the Byrecten, or town court, in Copenhagen for a two day trial.
If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of about 60 days -- although the maximum sentence is nine years.
Tofting, who signed for the Wanderers last February on a two year contract, was on a night out with 15 of the 23-strong Danish national team.
He is alleged to have head-butted restaurant chef Patrick de Meef following a row. The cook suffered a cut over his eyebrow and was taken to hospital for stitches.
A brawl continued outside the the Cafe Ketchup restaurant and Tofting allegedly punched de Meef's assistant Michael Wilson on the head.
Tofting was arrested and allowed home after being charged with violent disorder.
Per Jepson, head of the criminal investigation unit in Copenhagen, said: "We have completed our inquiries into Mr Tofting's case and we decided to push forward with it.
"He will appear on October 15 and 18."
Both the prosecution and defence solicitors are not giving any information about the case, but it is believed Everton footballer Thomas Gravesen, who was at the restaurant at the time, could be called to give evidence.
Restaurant co-owner Torben Olsen and Lars Berenott, head of communications at the DBU -- the Danish Equivalent of the Football Association, are also expected to appear.
A Bolton Wanderers spokesman said: "We are fully supportive of Stig Tofting at this time. We have spoken to his representatives and are fully aware of the situation. We fully respect the Danish legal system and believe a correct decision will be made."
The fight broke out in the Copenhagen restaurant after the Danish national team returned home from the World Cup.
Neither Stig Tofting nor Mr de Meef was available for comment.
