From the Evening News, June 13, 1992 - BIG-hearted firemen, back home from an emotional visit to Romania, say there is a "vast need" for help for the deprived orphanages.

The Bolton firemen, who have returned from a 15-day mercy mission, have likened the orphanage they adopted to "a big black hole". Four fire-fighters took part in the fact-finding mission, preparing for a mammoth re-building project in September. A team of 26 Greater Manchester firemen will be travelling to Romania to renovate and update ancient facilities still in use in the bleak orphanages.

BOLTON businessman Lance Dickinson turned in an impressive display to help Great Britain win a five-nation water skiing championship. Lance, aged 36, who has been taking part in competitions for just seven months, set a new British record as he finished a close second to European champion Pierre Clerc of Switzerland. The three-man British team beat opponents from Italy, Germany, Switzerland and host nation Belgium to carry off the Head Cup.

TODAY the Evening News launches a fight against Bolton's litter louts with a "Don't Drop Litter" campaign. It has been hailed as "wonderful" by councillors, and the Mayor, Counc. Donald Clarke, said it would be tragic if Bolton became a source of shame. He stressed: "Apart from looking a mess, litter costs money, and the council can ill afford to have staff doing unnecessary work".

LOCAL golf enthusiasts will shortly be able to buy a 2s 6d (12p) ticket and spend the whole day at the Municipal Golf Course. At present the charge is 1s 6d (7p) for a round of 18 holes, but no check is kept on the time a person is on the course. The Parks Superintendent told the Parks Committee that many people play 27 holes or more off one 1s 6d ticket, and he suggested that many golfers would take advantage of the day-ticket, which would enable them to stay on the course all day if they felt so inclined. The Committee also decided that plans of the golf course should no longer be printed for sale to the general public. Only 13 copies of the plan - they are 1d (p) each - were sold last year.

A WIDESPREAD interest has been created among good livers as to the composition of Grape-Nuts, the new ready-cooked breakfast food that has come into popular use of late. it has long been known to physicians, chemists and food experts that the starchy portion of entire wheat flour and barley is transformed into a true and very choice sugar by the act of intestinal digestion in the human body. this sugar is identical with, and is known as, grape sugar, and it is in condition for immediate transformation into blood and the necessary structure from which the delicate nerve centres are built up.

An American food expert followed a line of experiments until he produced the food named Grape-Nuts, of which grape sugar forms the principal part. It is produced by following out Nature's processes in a mechanical way. Grape-Nuts is probably entitled to the claim to be the most perfectly adapted food for human need now extanct. A little cream or milk with the ready-cooked cereal makes a most delicious breakfast of lunch dish for the summer or winter. Grocers supply at 7d per packet.
