From the Evening News, June 4, 1992 - BRITISH Gas is to close its showroom in Market Street, Farnworth - because it is not making enough money. A spokesman said: "Since it is within two miles of Walkden and three miles of Bolton, it is surplus to requirements."

BOLTON mounted a mopping up operation after sudden downpours caused flood damage throughout the town. Gutters and drains could not cope with the torrential rain which hit the town yesterday afternoon. Little Lever sports centre and school were among some of the worst affected buildings.

A WEARY Bolton family arrived home at 3am today after being stranded aboard the "blacked" QE2 for more than nine hours. Mr Michael Kirkman, his wife Sheila, and their baby daughter Sarah Jane, were among 1,600 passengers who were forced to spend an extra day on the luxury liner.

A row blew up when shipyard workers at Southampton discovered the ship was to have its annual refit in America instead of at their port. Tugmen refused to bring the QE2 into dock, and so the chip had to anchor off the Isle of Wight.

The dispute was settled when the QE2's owners agreed to give Southampton workers overhaul work on six cargo ships, and to let them refit the QE2 next year.

THE British Amateur Wrestling Association's team to take part in the Olympic Games at Helsinki during July and August includes two members of Bolton United Harriers' Club. They are L. Cheetham (flyweight) and H. Hall (featherweight). Cheetham, however, will have to wrestle with a Yorkshire rival, Walter Pilling, before it is decided which of the pair will be called upon to make the journey, and a number of "private bouts" are being arranged between the pair, one match in Bolton, and another in Bradford.

SIR,- Will you allow me to plead again for the annual outing of our slum children to the seaside. We greatly wish to send 2,400 children. The fund also provides for the maintenance of six cots in the Southport Hospital for poor children from all parts of Bolton. The sum we need is £300, and the Committee are very wishful that this, the Coronation year, should be signalised by generous help to this most deserving fund. All the services in connection with the outing are rendered most cheerfully and gratuitously, the money expended being exclusively in the interests of the children. Yours etc.,

Wm. Nicholson, Town Hall, Bolton.
