Singing in the Rain, Opera House, Manchester
YOU would think that people have had enough of rain and storms this summer, but last night the sun broke through the clouds -- for a few hours at least -- and lifted everyone's spirits in an absolute stormer of a show.
The young, vibrant cast kept the pace of the story flowing from start to finish and two-and-a-half hours just flew by.
Darren Bennett was perfect in the lead role of super smooth silent movie star Don Lockwood -- just think Gene Kelly in the original.
Richard Brightiff was superb as Cosmo Brown and Kathy Selden, the chorus girl with the golden voice, was brilliantly played by Cheryl McAvoy.
But it was Jacqui Rae, in the role of silent screen diva Lina Lamont who set the stage alight. She was an absolute scream -- in more ways than one. She didn't let her squeaky southern American accent slip all evening.
But it is the famous "dancing in the street with the umbrella" scene that everyone knows and loves -- and Darren Bennett certainly did not disappoint.
This show has everything -- comedy, romance and unforgettable songs. Don't miss it, but if you have a seat up front, be warned: you are sure to get wet!
Singing In The Rain runs until July 20.
