BFS Mixed Tennis League Press Report
The third round of the Bolton Sports Federation Tennis Cecil Cup, which was completed on Sunday 30th June, saw the last eight clubs competing for a place in the semi-finals.
No real surprises as title holders Markland Hill 'A' won virtually every set to love against Hawkshaw 'D'. This earns them a semi-final match with Next Generation which should be a close contest as Next Generation have proved to be tough opponents this year. David Lloyd (Bolton) moved comfortably through to the next round by winning every set against last year's runners-up Holcombe Brook 'D' and Bradshaw 'A' eventually won in a closer match with Markland Hill 'B'.
The semi-finals will take place on Sunday 28th July and the draw will be Next Generation v Markland Hill 'A' and Bradshaw 'A' v David Lloyd (Bolton). Clubs will be advised of handicaps following week 10 in the Mixed League tables.
In the tables following week 9 in the Mixed League, Division 1 leaders Holcombe Brook 'A' retained their comfortable lead with another convincing win, this time over Hawkshaw 'A'. The real contest in this Division is for second place as Markland Hill 'A' notched up another 2 points with a comfortable win over their 'B' team rivals. This put them in third position and some 4 points from second placed Hawkshaw 'A' on 14 points. With five matches left in the season, there is still enough time to gain valuable match points.
In Division 2, Walmer 'A' stay at the top with 14 points, but suffered at the hands of Bolton Cricket Club in a competitive contest that left only two games to separate the teams in the end, final score 45-43. Bolton Cricket Club gained two very valuable points which keeps them out of the relegation zone for the time being. Lower down the table, Eagley struggled to win games against a spirited David Lloyd (Manchester) 'A'. With eight points, David Lloyd are fairly clear of the bottom, but Eagley are still searching for their first win this season.
No real change after week nine in Division 3 with Next Generation 'A' booking their place in Division 2 with a win, this time over Lostock 'B'. They are now four points clear of second placed Barrow Bridge 'A' and, in this form, are likely to earn additional points before the close of the season.
In Division 5, Next Generation are making their presence felt once again with the 'B' team seemingly winning every point, game and match in sight. They now have 18 points with no losses to date and are making a very positive claim for a place in Division 4 next year. The battle for second place is currently taking place between Bolton School 'A' and Meadow Hill, both teams on 12 points with Bolton School having the advantage on games difference.
