AN appetite for hard work and taste for adventure have been the secrets to a long and happy life for centenarian Herbert Dale.
Mr Dale, who celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday, was so determined to find a job in his youth that he walked all the way to London.
He even set sail to America to take up employment in a hotel and had to come back after the Wall Street Crash.
The centenarian, who was born in Horwich, also worked at the town's locomotive works and spent many years at Leyland Motors.
He also worked at Lostock's aircraft factory during the Second World War.
Mr Dale lived in Barlow Street for 40 years and in Duncan Street for another 20 and still lives in Horwich today.
He married his wife Elizabeth in 1925 and has two children, Derek and Margory. He also has a grandson - Graham.
