IHANKS very much for such an informative piece regarding the state of Bolton's mental health.

However,we were quite saddened to see that no mention was made of the excellent work conducted by the local mental health voluntary agencies, all of whom work in partnership with the social and health services.

As your report highlights, there are thousands of local people who experience mental health problems, many of whom who do not fit the criteria to access the specialist services provided by the social and health services.

Mh.I.S.T. The Mental Health Independent Support Team has been in existence for 10 years this year. And, along with other voluntary sector organisations such as BAND, offers support to anybody who experiences mental health problems. Many of these people need help to combat the stigma and face their difficulties, which, without us, they would have to do alone and unaided. We provide advocacy services, befriending, counselling, information and a range of self-help groups.

In contrast to the millions of pounds which the mental health partnership has to spend, we deliver our services and support on a shoestring, using the goodwill, experience and expertise of volunteers. Of course, we are always looking for more money to continue and develop our work.

We agree with your article that yet more needs to be done. People want to have a voice and choice in how they receive their support and care. Mh.I.S.T. and other voluntary agencies give people that opportunity.

People who would like to support the voluntary sector in working and supporting this marginalised and misunderstood section of society, please contact us at Deajon House, 30 Chorley New Road, Bolton, BL1 4AP or telephone on 01204 527200.
