A TOTAL of 600 extra paramedic shifts will be needed to provide enough cover for the Commonwealth Games, according to Greater Manchester Ambulance Service.
Fifteen ambulances will serve the event's 17 venues each day, providing emergency cover for the 5,000 athletes and 1.5m visitors.
The ambulance service said the event is like covering 14 New Year's Eves -- day after day.
The cost for the additional cover will be funded by the Games' organisers.
