THE Mayor of Westhoughton, Cllr Brian Clare, has notched an impressive £10,100 for the region's top cancer hospital.
Cllr Clare decided to dedicate his mayoral year charity funds to Christie Hospital in Manchester after a number of his friends developed cancer.
After a visit to the hospital, he said: "We were so impressed, it really kindled our enthusiasm. It has such a friendly, non-clinical atmosphere."
He has now vowed to raise more money to help set up a gene therapy project.
He said: "When word spread that I had adopted Christie's as my main charity, people couldn't do enough to help.
"Residents of sheltered accomodation raised about £2,000 , the Houghton Weavers gave us a concert, a race night raised about £800 and the Mayor's Ball about £1,000."
