AMY Spencer is delighted about her inclusion in the Great Britain athletics squad for the European Championships in Munich.

The 16-year-old Bolton School pupil, was taken aback on being added to the 4x100m relay team, just hours after she arrived back from the World Junior Championships in Jamaica where she picked up two relay medals.

"I had absolutely no idea that I would be selected," said Amy, still jet-lagged from her trip. "It's a shock but I'm looking forward it.

"Being in the junior relay teams will help me because I'm much more used to the changeovers now.

"I'm very pleased because it was hard missing out on the Commonwealth Games, with it being local, but this news has made up for it."

Amy picked up a bronze in the 4x100m in Jamaica, and a silver in the 4x400m despite having never previously competed in the event.

She also made the final of the 200m, running a season's best 23.46sec along the way, which meant that she done enough to convince the selectors that she was well worth a place in Munich.

The Great Britain call-up is the icing on the cake for the girl who in the last 12 months has been voted BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, won the AAA indoor 200m title and took silver in the under-18 World Championships in Hungary.

Amy's Dad, Graham, who is also her coach, said: "Amy's going through a big learning curve at the moment with all these big, worldwide events. She'd never even been on an aeroplane until last year.

"It's all helping her to mature as an athlete and as a person, and she's doing tremendously."
