THOUSANDS of Commonwealth Games spectators are set to be disappointed as athletics events are cancelled next week - because there are not enough competitors.

The Monday morning session has already had to be re-arranged with 17,000 tickets refunded at a cost of £100,000.

Now Tuesday's day session has also been hit, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Only 16 men have entered for the shot and 15 women for ther high jump. That could mean the qualifying rounds that morning cancelled.

The only events definitely still going ahead are the heats of the men's long jump, four 4x400m races and the wheelchair 800m semi-finals.

This could mean spectators watching replays on the giant TV screen to pass the time.

Director of Sport Brian Stocks told the paper: "We have re-scheduled the programme to minimise the gaps.

"There will be replays on the big screen if there are sessions with gaps."
