GREATER Manchester Passenger Transport Authority's pilot night bus network is to be extended for another eight months. The project was introduced because of the rapid growth in the city's night-time economy. The aim of the project is to demonstrate to operators that a commercial night bus network is viable.

The 135 service to Bury is now being operated on a commercial basis and the 82 service to Oldham will become commercial from September.

Other services are also carrying substantial number of passengers.

Cllr Andrew Fender, chairman of the Policy Committee, said: "Around 60,000 passenger trips had been made by the end of June, an average of 1,700 passengers a week, which is fantastic news.

"We have said all along that this trial will kick start a network of commercially operated night services."

The subsidised night bus project will run until April 2002 and will continue to be closely monitored. Full details of all night bus services are available from Greater Manchester's Public Transport Information Line on 0161 228 7811, between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week.
