IT has been a busy fortnight in the town centre offices and, although I thought I knew a lot about Bolton town centre, it is amazing how much more I have learned in such a short space of time.

I have met with a lot of different groups, including council officials, community groups and business people, and it is clear to me that, without exception, everyone has a positive approach to the town centre and its future.

I will endeavour to keep updated with all issues that can or will affect you and any visitors to Bolton.

Now the Commonwealth Games are upon us. What a fantastic opportunity for Bolton to present itself to the world as a welcoming and friendly place. The Queen's baton came through Bolton on Tuesday en route to Manchester and it was great to see the enthusiasm with which it was greeted by the crowds in Victoria Square.

The cycling event at Rivington is certainly a brilliant opportunity -- weather permitting -- to have an enjoyable, free day out. I am aware that every effort is being made by the council and police on the issue of road closures and traffic management over the next few days. The aim is to ensure minimal inconvenience and disruption to both residents and visitors for the events.

During the Games, the Bolton Town Centre Company is offering its own celebration in Victoria Square from Wednesday, July 31, until Saturday, August 3, called the Spirit of Bolton Festival, to celebrate the cultural diversity of Bolton. The Festival will be themed, with each day offering a chance to "visit" different parts of the world with dance, music and fun for all the family. Why not bring the family into town? The children will receive free balloons, face painting and henna hand painting. For the mums there will be a lady doing very unusual things with eyebrows and cotton (I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it sounds fascinating!).

The event runs from 10am-4pm each day.

So come into town and feel the "Spirit" of Bolton.

Until next time -- have fun.
