TRAIN strikes due to start in the North-west today have been cancelled with drivers winning their £28,000 pay deal.

Talks between First North Western and union Aslef averted action planned for Sunday, Monday and August 4 and 6, which would have affected three days of the Commonwealth Games.

The chief executive of the sporting event had publically appealed for Aslef to call off the strike.

Further strikes planned for later in the summer are expected to be formally called off by the Union's executive next week.
