POLICE chiefs have told Commonwealth Games officials to explain motorway rules and regulations to athletes after two members of Kenya's cycling team were caught training on the M61 near Bolton.

Dressed in racing helmets and Lycra shorts, competitors George Ochieng, aged 24 and Arthur Kamu, aged 27, were stopped by motorway police on the hard shoulder, just past Kearsley Spur, at 40mph.

They told shocked officers they had travelled from the athletes' village in Fallowfield and were heading for Rivington on the approach to the Bolton's busy M61.

Police advised the pair -- who spoke perfect English -- before escorting them from the motorway and pointing them towards the A6.

And today, police chiefs revealed event organisers have been told to warn their athletes of the dangers of cycling on motorways.

Police received a number of calls from motorists claiming to have spotted the pair weaving in and out of traffic. They were eventually stopped at 11.30am on Wednesday.
