PUPILS at Turton High School decided to become budding rock stars for a day during the school holidays.

A group of 25 pupils took part in the school's first rock music workshop in which two local musicians and the school's head of music, John Parkinson, shared their knowledge with the young wannabe rock stars.

Guitarist John Maycraft and drummer Gary Watton both teach part time at the Bromley Cross school and enjoyed taking the youngsters through their paces.

Mr Maycraft brought in old guitar amps and equipment which allowed the pupils to create new sounds.

He said: "The kids did really well. It's good to see them taking such an interest and being able to use equipment they might not be able to afford to buy themselves."

Pupil Chris Kay, aged 16, who is a Sum 41 fan, was looking for drumming tips and said: "The workshop was really good.

"It's fun and useful to go back to basics. We worked together in groups of five as if we were in real bands.

"I go to college in September and can't wait to form a band."

The music department has run several music masterclasses throughout the year.

Pupils from Year Eight also enjoyed an end-of-term treat when they learned how to play Indonesian percussion instruments at a workshop run by Bolton Music Service.
