A MOTORIST is fighting for his life in hospital today after suffering serious internal injuries in a hit-and-run accident.
The man, aged 55, from Leigh, was driving his Ford Escort along Wigan Road near to the junction with Browning Street, in Leigh, at 7.22pm yesterday when it was in collision with a Nissan Bluebird. Police said the driver ran from the scene.
The Escort driver was taken to Wigan Royal Infirmary where he was due to undergo surgery today.
Sgt Anthony Tuffin, from Leigh Police Traffic Unit, today said it was still unclear how the accident happened.
He added: "I would appeal to the driver of the Nissan to speak to us as soon as possible. He may not have realised that the other driver had suffered such serious injuries.
"It is in his best interests to come to us, rather than for officers to track him down."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wigan traffic unit on 0161 856 7273, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
