THREE trialists gave themselves a great chance of landing long-term contracts at Leigh RMI after sensational performances on the two-day tour of the Isle of Man.
John McGill in particular impressed as an attacking wide player for the Railwaymen, scoring in both the 2-0 win over Peel and a 7-1 hammering of an under-strength Isle of Man XI side.
McGill is rated by manager Steve Waywell as having 'more tricks up his sleeve than
Steve Jones,' and could be one of those to land a place in the RMI squad after the club lost the services of winger-come-striker Michael Twiss
earlier this summer.
He could be joined by former Blackpool centre-half Wayne Madden, who, at only 19, looks to have a great future ahead of him. Madden might even edge
Jamie Udall out of contention for a place in the side particularly if Udall is slow to renew his contract which expired at the end of last season.
Ged Courtenay continued to impress throughout the weekend, as RMI's future starts to look brighter and brighter by the week.
"There are a lot of plus points to take out of this tour", said a delighted Waywell. "I have learned a lot about the trial players and all the lads who
travelled with us were outstanding. A lot of them were young lads but they did a tremendous job for us."
Andy Heald rounded off the scoring against Peel, while a Stuart Johnson hat-trick set the Railwaymen on their way against the IOM side.
Leigh will travel to Prestwich Heys tonight (Thursday) for their fourth warm-up match of the summer and will follow that up with a trip to Marine on Saturday.
Bury will visit Hilton Park for one of only two home friendlies this year next Tuesday evening.
