RESIDENTS are today claiming a moral victory after a planning application to turn fields at Nab Gate Farm, Harwood, into an extension of a golf course was withdrawn at the 11th hour.
The Breightmet Golf Club plans were due to go before Bolton Council's planning committee tomorrow.
Residents have now called off their demonstration, which was due to take place at the Stitch-Mi-Lane farm tomorrow morning.
Campaigner Mr Ian Broadley said: "We are absolutely delighted that the golf club has withdrawn at the last minute. I think this is a moral breakthrough."
Tomorrow's application involved turning a field farmed by Arnold Davenport into a bigger golf course.
Cllr Diana Brierley said: "The application was withdrawn by a fax message late yesterday at the 11th hour.
"We can only speculate that the golf club were devastated by the wealth of local opposition."
Residents have supported Mr Davenport, who faces eviction from the farm.
Campaigners claimed a covenant has been placed on the land. No-one was available to comment from the golf club.
