This year, Bolton Sailing Club is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. It was founded on December 14, 1952, with the inaugural meeting taking place at the Black Bull in Belmont, Dr Geoffrey G. Benson, the Secretary, tells me.
These pictures (see final paragraph) show the victorious team from the club which won the prestigious 24-hour dinghy race on the Marine Lake, Southport in 1978, competing against more than 100 other teams.
The other photograph, below, shows some of the 50 would-be yachtsmen who started their apprenticeship at the Belmont Reservoir, home of the club, in 1974. They ranged in age from 13 to 60, and here are seen with the Rear-Commodore of the club, Mr Donald Godbert, during the first lesson.
