AT Tootals School Sports Day (Continuation School) in 1948, Pauline Birchall and Betty Fretwell won the three-legged race.
Pauline, now Pauline Ridyard, has just moved to live near her daughter Virginia and Virginia's husb and, the Rev John Corbyn, newly-appointed Vicar of Holy Cross, Bearsted, Kent.
As she was born in Deane and has lived in this area all her life (latterly in Wigan Road, Hunger Hill), she realises what a great wrench it is leaving friends and Church family here, particularly as her life has been connected with Deane Church, first through Sunday School, then the Youth Club, Brownie leader and Sunday School leader, over many years.
Pauline has sent many photographs to this column, and I wish her well in her new life.
Tootals School Sports Day, by the way, was connected with Tootal, Broadhurst and Lees," Pauline tells me. "We attended two half days per week, until the age of 18."
