From the Evening News, July 31, 1992 - HEALTH bosses are making 220 cleaners redundant in three Bolton hospitals. After a special meeting of Bolton Health Authority yesterday, it was announced that the "in house" domestic service had lost a three-year cleaning contract to Mediclean Limited, a Slough-based organisation.

In 1986, Mediclean was awarded the cleaning contract tor Bolton Royal Infirmary, but the contracts at Bolton General, Fall Birch, and Hulton hospitals were awarded to the authority's own domestic staff.

BOLTON'S Palais dance hall was wrecked by a mystery fire yesterday. The cause of the blaze remains a mystery, but the only part of the building to escape damage was the entrance foyer. The main dance floor with stage and four bars was completely wrecked. The Bali Hai disco, in a separate part of the building, was not damaged by fire, but was waterlogged and the decor ruined. A spokesman said that it was hoped the dance hall could re-open before Christmas.

People standing on each side of the road gave him a rousing reception, and when he entered the works he was almost "mobbed". He had a smile, a cheery word and often a firm hand-shake for everyone who greeted him.
