In Castlefield, one of Manchester's most established drinking districts which also includes nearby bars Barca, Jackson's Wharf and Quay Bar. Dukes is adjacent to Lock 92 of the Rochdale canal, hence the name.
What?
Dukes 92 has the atmosphere of a cafe bar but the venue is an old converted warehouse in one of Manchester's most historic areas so it also has a traditional feel. The interior is spacious with casual couches and large sturdy pine tables mixing the contemporary with the classic, plus an art gallery and private function area upstairs. But most appealing is the large outdoor drinking area with benches which becomes a popular choice when the sun makes an appearance.
Handbag or heavy metal?
Not limiting itself to one genre, Castlefield just relies on good music, with DJs at the weekend providing some cool tunes. As is the case this weekend, the plentiful space surrounding the bar means that Castlefield frequently plays host to music festivals offering anything from indie and drum'n'bass to hip hop and house.
In Crowd?
The Dukes crowd is fairly mixed - when the sun shines contented groups of people can be found participating in all-day drinking sessions. However the atmosphere is always civilised, the dress code casual and the pub a nice place to chill out. Be warned - on hot weekends the areas both inside and outside the pub tend to be rammed.
What's The Damage?
There is no charge to get in the bar, which offers a range of continental and local ales at average (high) prices for the city centre. Food-wise, Dukes is renowned for its cheese and pate platters, which are served with pickles.
