THE 89-year-old man who died of Legionnaires' disease in the biggest outbreak of the bug in the UK for around a decade was today named as Richard Macaulay.
Mr Macaulay, also known locally as Gerry, died on Friday afternoon, just hours after news emerged of the outbreak in the Cumbrian town of Barrow-in-Furness.
Four patients were today giving doctors "cause for concern" and a further 11 were receiving treatment in intensive care units across North-west England.
A total of 70 people were in hospital, 54 of whom had definitely contracted the bug.
A council officer responsible for maintenance of the air conditioning unit thought to be at the centre of the outbreak was suspended yesterday pending the results of an investigation.
