NEW figures show the number of people infected with HIV in the region has risen by over a third over the past year.
Health officials in the North-west are now calling for more to be done to highlight the danger of unprotected sex.
A new report by Liverpool John Moores University and the North West Public Health Observatory says 2,000 people in the region are being treated for HIV.
It says it may partly be due to people not practising safe sex when they go to HIV and Aids-prevalent countries.
