WE are told that the population of rats is increasing, mainly due to the throwaway society of today.
Food and other litter is tossed carelessly on the streets.
The sale of drinks in plastic bottles means that many are discarded anywhere, except in litter bins. Glass bottles that once could be exchanged for money are smashed on the streets of our town without a thought of the consequences.
Years ago, food was too precious to be thrown away, and all our waste was burned on open fires in our homes. Then came the Clean Air Act, central heating, gas and electric fires replaced coal, and soon our dustbins were overflowing. The air above us is clear of smoke and fumes, but the mountain of waste grows daily.
Landfill sites cannot take much more. Our once beautiful countryside is festooned with plastic bags, crisp bags and all sorts of rubbish. Burnt-out cars, dog mess, unwanted furniture everywhere you look.
What has happened to national pride?
Gone with respect and good manners. Greed and selfishness has taken over.
