Leigh RMI 0 Crewe Alexandra 3 by Martyn Hindley
LEIGH RMI looked worryingly devoid of goal-scoring options on Monday night as they were crushed by Second Division Crewe Alexandra in their penultimate warm-up match.
With the Nationwide League just five days away, Dario Gradi sent a slightly below strength side to Hilton Park but they wasted no time in going 2-0 ahead.
John Miles fired a venomous low shot past Ian Wilcox in the eighth minute and when James Robinson coolly converted a through ball 10 minutes later, it looked as though a rout might be on the cards.
Crewe might have had more had it not been for the impressive defensive duo of Neil Durkin and Wayne Maden, who held things together well for the hosts. With Gerry Harrison still to come back into contention for a place before the season, back four prospects look promising.
But with new signing Damien Whitehead misfiring and seasoned campaigners Tony Black and Dino Maamria yet to regain match fitness, the Conference Railwaymen rarely looked like scoring.
They were punished for their poor build-up play when former Leigh favourite Steve Jones rounded off the scoring midway through the second half.
RMI Wilcox, Monk, Cornelly, Durkin, Maden, Fitzhenry, Salt, Kielty, Maamria, Black, Courtney. Subs: Spooner, Whitehead, Archer, Darbyshire, Spencer, McGill.
