A BOLTON-BASED owl rescue group is appealing for funding to help build an owl sanctuary in the town.
North West Owl Rescue, founded 12 months ago by Lee and Lisa Kirk, has two sites on which it looks after rescued owls in Little Lever and Breightmet.
And now they hope to raise enough cash to build a new centre, with a classroom to allow schoolchildren to view the birds in their natural habitat.
Mr Kirk said: "When we have been on school visits, we've received letters from the children afterwards because they have enjoyed seeing the owls so much. The sanctuary will allow them to get closer to the birds, rather than their being in a zoo in a cage, or behind glass."
The eight volunteers look after captive bred owls that have been injured or abused by owners.
When they arrive at one of the centres, from the RSPCA and RSPB, volunteers look after them until they can be released. Anyone wanting to donate money can contact the rescue group on 01204 535265.
