THIEVES robbed a Bolton Festival performer of his "life's work" when they stole his car from outside his lodgings.

But despite losing his props, costume, artwork, musical instruments and masks, performer Neil Farrelly vowed the show would go on.

Even Neil's clothes, left inside the car, were taken, and he had to borrow a T-shirt from his landlady.

Undeterred, he appeared at the town centre's art gallery yesterday to perform his Insight Into Japan show.

And today, he said he would still honour two more appearances in Bolton -- at the Oxford Grove After School Club this morning, and the Breightmet Arts Group this afternoon.

Neil uses authentic instrument, costume and props to describe the life and culture of Japan.

An expert on that country, Neil, who comes from the South of England, has appeared in Bolton before.

Following the theft, Neil improvised for his his show, borrowing pads, pens and markers from festival organisers.

But now he is desperate for the return of his car.

The vehicle was taken from Chadwick Street, Bolton, between 4pm and 5pm on Wednesday, when Neil was preparing for his show at the art gallery.

The car is a white Ford Sierra estate, 1.8litre, registration F874 CDA.

A festival spokesman said: "Although the contents of the car meant everything to Neil, they will be of no value to anyone who took the car.

"Despite the shock, Neil is feeling surprisingly perky and has been more concerned about the job in hand. Although the theft did not ruin Neil's performance, it did hinder him.

"He is of course desperate to get the car back. He needs it as much as anything to return home."

The theft has been reported to police and anyone who can help should phone Bolton police on 0161 872 5050 or contact the festival office on 01204 334115.
