THERE have been many events during this year which have taken long to plan and been brilliant in execution: the Queen's Silver Jubilee and the Commonwealth Games to name but two.

However, one matter seems no nearer completion, even after seven months. I refer to the roadworks at the junction of Manchester/Bolton Road and Longcauseway in Farnworth.

The road surface is still pot-holed and various pipes are still exposed, for no apparent purpose. The irony is that when (or if) the work is complete, it will not cure the main problem in that area, namely the long tailbacks on to the M61 spur. It is rather like the work done in Moses Gate at the junction of Hall Lane and Bolton Road a couple of years ago, it cured nothing, took ages, and made traffic conditions worse.

Bolton Council have now put up notices about major road works about to commence in Little Lever. I have notified friends and work colleagues that if I fail to appear over the next few months, it is more than likely due to the slow work of the council than I have been cut off from the rest of civilisation.
