AS a resident of Stoneclough, I am absolutely appalled at the needless death of eight-year-old Billy Dean, and, although words matter little at a time like this, we send our deepest condolences to his obviously distraught family.

Sadly, the words "an accident waiting to happen" are the only ones that come to mind.

My wife and I exercise our dog each night and the amount of vehicles travelling in excess of the national speed limit, never mind 30 mph, is quite unbelievable. Sometimes we have to drag our dog across the road just to get out of their way. In all the time we have lived down here, we have never once seen a police officer book anyone, let alone talk to an offender. The council may have spent vast amounts of money refurbishing the roadways, but they have paid scant attention to the fact that it's only made the surface easier for the speeders. Just putting sterile speed camera signs up is not enough, we need to action now.

As an LGV driver covering over 1000 miles per week, I know how effective speed

cameras can be, also coupled with the type of speed calmer which is currently working well on main tributary roads in places such as Liverpool.

We also need action to stop people obscuring other drivers' view of the road by parking on Market Street.

Sadly, nothing can be done for Billy now, but please don't let his death teach us nothing. Let's try to save another family from having to mourn their child after a terrible accident like the one witnessed here on Saturday night.
