A PLAQUE is to be unveiled to commemorate the life of a former Adlington mayor and carnival president.

Idris Rees, known by all his friends as Ted, died aged 82 in February, at St Catherine's Hospice, Preston, after suffering health problems throughout his life. He founded the Adlington Carnival Committee in 1972.

Mr Rees served as a member of Adlington Town Council and the former urban district council for a total of 43 years, and was chosen to be its chairman and mayor six times.

The work he did for the village is to be remembered with a plaque in the Adlington wing of the Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital, and will be unveiled at the end of September.

Carnival organiser Colin Prescott said: "This is a great mark of respect for the man known as Mr Adlington.

"He was greatly missed this year at the carnival and I know he would be over the moon with the plaque."

During his time as mayor, Mr Rees raised money for his two chosen charities, the League of Friends for the Disabled and Guide Dogs for the Blind, which he said were both very much in need of support.

Originally from South Wales, Mr Rees moved to Southport in 1947, and was an Adlington resident from 1953.
