VILLAGERS in Edenfield are being urged to air their views on plans to site a wind farm in their area.
United Utilities and Peel Holdings are investigating the possibility of developing such a farm on the moors between Edenfield and Whitworth in Rochdale to generate energy.
The area has been earmarked for its high wind speeds, easy access and its remote location.
However local communities and organisations will be consulted and a environmental assessment will be made for a decision is reached.
Paul Hunt, business development manager for United Utilities, said: "Our traditional method of producing energy, by burning fossil fuels, is contributing to the problems of global warming.
"The UK Government is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and has set statutory targets for renewable energy production. Generating energy from wind power is one of the most practical and environmentally acceptable ways to meet these targets.
"We believe that with careful, sensitive siting and proper local consultation, wind farms can play a role in meeting the region's energy needs."
Richard Brewster, development manager for Peel Holdings, added: "Involving local communities and listening to their views is at the top of our agenda.
"Both Peel and United Utilities have their roots firmly in the north west. We will continue to be neighbours of communities in Rossendale and Rochdale for the long term and we will, therefore, only consider the potential for wind farm development in the a responsible and sensitive manner."
