OLDER people in Bolton are to benefit from a £30,000-a-year Lottery award which should make their lives better, improve home safety and reduce their chances of ending up in hospital.
The money, from the New Opportunities Fund, will be used to help people over the age of 50 to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and is in line with Government plans to free beds occupied by the elderly at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
The scheme will focus on home safety and accident prevention. The Fund says health problems are often caused by the quality of home life, especially for older people living in deprived areas. Social isolation among ethnic minority residents will also be tackled.
Bolton's Age Concern will run the scheme, receiving £30,000 a year to reduce the risk of falls leading to hospital admission, improve take up of benefits and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
Margaret Burford, from Age Concern in the North-west, said: "We are excited about the opportunities opened up by this funding. We are certain it will greatly benefit older people and enable them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives."
