LAST week I spent some time catching up with copies of the Bolton Evening News I missed when I was away, and I came across a very interesting "vox pop".
A reporter and photographer had hit the streets in town and asked passing shoppers their opinions on various issues. This particular article on August 12 was about what people thought about our town centre because Bolton Council is drawing up a guideline document for the future of Bolton.
Various comments were made on cleanliness and the number of empty shops in town. Both these issues are major concerns of our company and the council. Although we, at the Bolton Town Centre Company, are not owned by the council, we do work very closely with them. Together we are endeavouring to keep our town clean and to encourage new business into the centre. I would welcome any comments from readers as to what they would like to see in town or any retailers you feel we are missing.
An interesting comment was made by Tracie Sheridan regarding creche facilities and I know this has been talked about for more than two years. As a mother of two, I think it would be wonderful to be able to shop without constantly worrying about your little ones. The problem with establishing a creche is finding premises, qualified staff, and keeping the fees down to a minimum. Is there anyone out there willing to help?
Parking, as usual, was a major concern. Again, the best advice I can give is to make sure you park on the multi-storey car parks where you can pay on exit and you can guarantee that you won't get a ticket. I know it is tempting to use the on street parking spaces available if you think you will only be a short while. Yes (I have done it and, yes I got a ticket) I am in good company with the major! But is it really worth having to keep your eye on the clock and cutting short your visit into town? And before you all flood me with letters and phone calls, please note I am aware that among the complaints there are some justified cases.
Bolton town centre has got a lot to offer, so don't rush in and out. Spend some quality time visiting all the great shops. Please support your town centre to ensure it not only stays as vibrant as it is at the moment, but also so that it can continue to improve and grow.
Questionnaires for the council guideline document were available at the Bolton Show and they have also been sent out to businesses in town for their comments. I believe various workshops have taken, or are taking, place for your opinions to be heard until the middle of this month and I will let you know the outcome of these as soon as possible.
