IPSWICH Town have sacked George Burley after almost eight years in charge writes Andrew Buswell.
A poor result against Grimsby midweek saw Ipswich slip closer to the danger zone.
The Tractor Boys now lie in 19th place after being relegated from the Premiership last season and despite years of loyalty chairman David Sheepshanks could wait no longer.
Sheepshanks said: "I would like to place on record our immense thanks to George for his outstanding service and many tremendous achievements throughout his tenure - Wembley 2000, finishing fifth in our first season in the Premiership and competing in the UEFA Cup are highlights in our history of which George can be justly proud."
Burley took charge in December 1994 and guided the club into the Premiership in 1999-2000 before Ipswich secured a place in the UEFA Cup after finishing fifth in their first season back in the top flight. He has praised the supporters who backed him during his spell in charge at Portman Road after being sacked as Ipswich manager.
Burley said: "During my eight years as manager I have enjoyed some great successes. Most significantly taking the club back into the Premiership, finishing fifth and qualifying for Europe after a 20-year absence.
"I would like to thank all the Board, staff and players for their loyal support and in particular to our fans who have supported me tirelessly throughout my time as manager."
Burley's sacking adds to the managerial merry-go-round following Howard Wilkinson's appointment at Sunderland in place of Peter Reid yesterday.
And today former England caretaker coach Peter Taylor, who left Brighton earlier this year, was appointed manager of Third Division Hull City.
