THE number of unemployed people in Bolton has fallen below the regional average for the first time in more than a year.
A total of 3.4 per cent of the population in the borough does not have a job, compared with 3.6 per cent in Greater Manchester and Liverpool.
It is the first time since June 2001 that the number of employed people in Bolton has risen above the regional figure.
Currently, 4,280 people are unemployed in the town, 3,334 are men and 946 are women. However, the Bolton still has its problem areas, according to the figures compiled four months ago which have been released by the council.
In the Derby ward, a total of 457 men and women do not have a job - which works out at 9.3 per cent. And 381 people who live in the town centre are also without work. This works out at 8.9 per cent. The areas enjoying the least unemployment in Bolton are Blackrod, with 87 people (1.3 per cent), Horwich with 103 (1.4 per cent), Hulton Park with 127 (1.6 per cent) and Bromley Cross with 134 (1.9 per cent).
