THE WEATHER was again kind for the second week of Winter Rounders, but despite having six players back from holiday, Royal Hotel could only muster five to play Mytham Ladies in the John Smiths Farnworth League, and again
conceded. Fortunately, most of the players who turned up at Harper Green for this match managed to get a game with other teams.
Section A produced a couple of close games, with Adlington coming from three behind at the interval to beat Hanson by seven runs, and Siddons beating Imago by 10. Darcy had a more comfortable victory beating newly promoted Tonge Fold XI by 44 runs.
Two Section B sides scored 158 runs, but that proved a winning score for only one of them. In the case of The Volunteer it was enough to beat Advance Computer Systems by 19, but for Bolton Motor Bodies it spelt defeat by just eight runs at the hands of the Church Inners.
The Grapes beat Carl Chapman by 15 runs, and Capital had a very comfortable 71 run win at the expense of Tonge Moor Conservative Club.
In the Halliwell League, Westhoughton & District scored nine rounders in their one innings to totally overpower Boundary Ladies who lasted the 33 good balls, and scored 44 runs plus their 20 run start in the first innings, but were all out for 19 in 27 balls in the second innings.
A 20-run start helped Cheetham Ladies to 64 in their first innings, just three runs behind Bolton Lads & Girls Club, but despite scoring better in the second innings were all out in 28 good balls. Lads & Girls Club scored 12 runs off the last six balls, including a rounder, to give them victory by 11.
Darcy XI finished their first innings with a flourish, hitting four rounders in the last nine balls, but a 30-run handicap put them eight runs behind Smithills Coaching House at the break. Darcy added 68 runs in their second
innings while dismissing Smithills for 29 runs off 25 good balls, thus taking victory by a comfortable 31 run margin.
Farmers XI gave Pineapple XI a 10 run start, but found themselves trailing by 20 after the first innings having been all out with five balls to spare. A pep talk at the interval resulted in a change of fortune and it was Pineapple XI who failed to go the distance in the second innings as Farmers XI ran our winners by 113-96.
There was confusion at the end of the innings because some players believed they were not permitted to "den" in a limited ball game. This type of game is no different from a normal game in this respect. Normal rounders rules
apply. If there are no batters in the line waiting to bat, the fielders are permitted to "den". Note that the words "you CAN den" have been carefully avoided here.
Hampsons XI is a team of inexperienced players and they had something of a shock when they faced defending champions Morris Roofing. With only eight players at the start, they were dismissed for just eight runs in 10 balls
in their first innings. Their 80-run start, however, put them one run ahead at the interval.
Morris Roofing backed off in the second innings and Hampsons scored 33, but with 12 rounders, Morris Roofing added 123 runs, two more than their opponents total, but Hampsons would probably learn more from playing top
opposition than from playing a team similar to themselves.
Hulton Lane Ladies and Lower Pools showed remarkable consistency in their match with Hulton Lane scoring 55 and 50, while Lower Pools scored 96 and 89. The 40-run handicap resulted in Hulton being just two behind at the
break, but they didn't have the luxury of a start in the second innings.
The Eagley League, expanded to eight teams this season, made a successful start on Sunday.
