AN extra pair of eyes will be scouring the streets of Great Lever for crime after the council was given cash for another community warden.
The uniformed warden will be patrolling the streets of Bolton to make residents feel safer as part of a government-backed pilot scheme.
A team of 12 wardens is already patrolling Great Lever, Deane, and Over Hulton, after the scheme started 18 months ago.
Commercial Services got the extra cash after making a bid to the council to extend the scheme after residents said in a survey that they felt safer with the wardens around. The new post will have a salary of £12,291 to £14,040 a year and runs until March 2003 or 2005 if extra funding can be found.
Duties include patrolling on foot in pairs between 8am and 9pm providing services including accompanying elderly people to the post office and back to their homes.
The wardens visit primary school pupils to warn of the dangers of anti-social behaviour and have close contact with the police, passing on information people might not tell a police officer.
Deadline for applications for the post is December 5 and the council hopes to have someone on the streets in January.
