A TEENAGER who died when the car he was a passenger in was catapulted into the air and landed on its roof has been named by police.
Andrew James Whitby, aged 18, from Skipton Close, Bury, was thrown 20 feet from the car in Bradshaw Road early on Friday. Police said it was thought the driver had been overtaking another car when he lost control on a bend.
Andrew was sitting in the rear seat of the Peugeot 106 GTi, which was being driven by a friend. He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with severe head injuries after the accident at 12.30am, but died an hour later.
The 19-year-old driver, from Ramsbottom, had several fingers amputated at the scene after being cut free from the wreckage. He was taken to Bury's Fairfield Hospital for treatment.
A second passenger, aged 19, from Bury, was treated for serious back injuries and taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Bolton Police are appealing for anyone with information about the collision to contact their traffic unit on 0161 856 5972.
