THE sound of musket fire echoed through Bolton town centre at the weekend -- for the first time in 350 years.
Passers-by watched from shop doorways as the town was invaded and Churchgate was turned into a battle ground.
But there was no need for concern. The battle was staged by Civil War re-enactment group The Sealed Knot.
Members of the group were at Bolton's oldest pub, Ye Olde Man and Scythe, on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the execution of the 7th Earl of Derby in October, 1651.
Soldiers paraded in full period costume carrying weapons, and just after 1pm muskets were fired outside the pub where the Earl spent his last hours before he was publicly beheaded.
Members of the society had travelled from as far as Essex and south Wales to take part. Female members of the group mingled with the crowds dressed in authentic costumes.
Shoppers gathered along the pavements of Churchgate to watch the group demonstrate how soldiers in the 1600s would have fought their battles.
Ann Liston, from the Sir John Owen's unit of the Sealed Knot society, said: "It's great to take part in an event like this as we have such an interest in the Civil War."
The Sealed Knot is seeking new members in the Bolton, Wigan, Manchester, Preston and Southport areas. Battles are staged at shows around the country to raise cash for charity.
