Bolton 2nd 39, Bury 2nd 0
BOLTON'S first team had no fixture this weekend, as their scheduled game with neighbours Bury had to be cancelled due to their rivals' cup commitments.
Club coach Ged Byrne the former Wigan Rugby League player, used the time to run a squad session in preparation for the forthcoming league games.
The second fifteen ran out comfortable winners against Bury at Avenue Street.
Tries came from Andy Bowring, Danny Ryder, Steve Morrison scored twice each, while Danny Barlow and Les Towler, with a scintillating solo try, completed the scoring.
The final score of 39-0 against their arch rivals was pleasing enough, but it was the manner of all the points being scored by the backs that gave the most satisfaction.
The only bad spot of the afternoon was the referee's constant whistling for offences supposedly committed on the floor by the home side.
This led to frustration in the Bolton camp and stand off Simon Clarke was sent off for a rather innocuous comment.
Bolton's thirds had to reschedule their game and played a strong Preston side at home.
Bolton opened the scoring through Paul Hunt from the back of a driving maul.
Ralph Hayes added two penalties before Preston responded with a try. A penalty to the visitors gave a half time of score of 11-10 in Bolton's favour.
Preston used their much bigger pack to good advantage in the second half and dominated the game, scoring three further tries as Bolton struggled to get any possession.
The final score of 27-11 to the visitors was just reward for their second half performance, as Bolton played well but could not maintain their early good work.
Bolton's vets were left frustrated as Bury cried off close to kick off.
Away from the pitch Bolton have been very active promoting rugby in the local schools, with Ged Byrne visiting several schools to prepare their year 8 sides for a tournament to be held at the club in November.
Two sixth form colleges have also recently played, with Thornleigh and North College both playing at Bolton School.
Training for seniors and colts is at the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.00 p.m. and for the junior section at 10.00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Further details are available from Les Towler on 01942 743063 or the clubhouse 363710.
The club opens it's brand new facilities on Sunday 27th October. Malcolm Phillips from the RFU will open the clubhouse extensions at 12.30pm, as part of a day that will see all the junior sections play, staring at 10.30am, culminating with the senior colts playing at 2pm.
The club would like to welcome any members of the general public to come along.
