A DECISION is expected today on whether to merge two of the region's most prominent universities.
A merger between the University of Manchester and UMIST would create Britain's biggest university.
The move would make it easier for people to apply for larger research grants and would offer more student places.
UMIST -- the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology -- was founded in 1824, while the University of Manchester opened in 1851.
