1857: The first football team, Sheffield FC, were formed at a meeting of Cambridge University old boys.
1976: Britain's James Hunt won the Formula One world title with third place in the Japanese Grand Prix, securing him the championship by one point from Niki Lauda. The Austrian had quit the race at Fuji in torrential rain, fearing a crash just 11 weeks after being badly burned in a race accident.
1987: Frank Bruno stopped 37-year-old Joe Bugner from regaining the British heavyweight boxing title at White Hart Lane.
2000: Tanni Grey-Thompson collected her third gold medal of the Paralympics in Sydney when the Cardiff-born wheelchair athlete added the T53 classification women's 200 metres to the 100m and 800m titles she won earlier in the week.
