IT will be a right royal final for the Lancashire Quiz Challenge.

The Crown at Horwich will take on the King William pub in the head to head for the Bolton Evening News trophy on Wednesday, October 30.

But the Crown may think they have an advantage as the final will be played on their home turf.

The match will be the culmination of months of quizzes held around Bolton and Lancashire throughout the summer.

The challenge organised by the Bolton Evening News in conjunction with BBC Radio Lancashire and Radio GMR involved pub and works teams taking part in bells and buzzers rounds which were recorded and then broadcast on the radio stations.

But next week is the big one. The Crown team are already well known on the quiz circuit - and they could have another home advantage as there are rumours that the Horwich Quiz League which meets on Wednesdays may cancel in order to go along and support the lads.

The team is led by Bill Bainton a retired engineer, he is joined by teacher Derek Heyes and Geoff Martin who is retired. The fourth member is Mark, a late substitute.

"We are looking forward to it," said Bill.

Over at the King William pub, Chapeltown Road, retired teachers Mike Richards and Paul Gradwell will be joined by Ted Green and Pete Vickers.

On their way to the finals the Crown polished off teams from Barnoldswick and Accrington, and the King William saw off competition from Burnley and Poulton-le-Fylde.

Acting as quizmaster and ensuring fair play on the evening will be Bolton entertainer Norman Prince.

Everyone is welcome to cheer on the teams and the events start at 8.30pm.
